(International Contemporary Art Biennial)!

VATEL, A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE 12TH INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART BIENNIAL
03/09/2013

For the very first time, Vatel International Business School will partner with the International Contemporary Art Biennial that will take place in Lyon from September 12, 2013 to January 05, 2014.

Supporting the Biennale seemed completely obvious to us at Vatel.

On the one hand, to show our students that Arts and Hospitality are closely related: art, whether we are talking about paintings, decorative, figurative, new or contemporary art, is present in hotels under many different forms and styles.

This also was an opportunity for us to develop our students’ curiosity, open their minds to other things, and hone their artistic and analytic spirits and multiculturalism, so that, when it’s their turn, they also will contribute to promoting Art during their professional and international careers.

On the other hand, the Contemporary Art Biennial hosts artists from the entire world and targets a local as well as international public. Once again an affinity with Vatel, which teaches the “Art of French Hospitality,” in all of its Schools on five different continents with international courses.

Last but not least, theme of this 12th Biennale also seemed evident to us. Ever since the Biennial began in 1991, its Art Director, Thierry Raspail, has proposed to commissioners he’s invited to think about a key word which would then be the object of an artistic interpretation. This year, the term “Transmission” was chosen as the main guiding theme of the Biennial. This theme is very similar to Vatel’s primary ambition: conveying knowledge, know-how and people-oriented skills to its students.

Romain RAPOPORT

Romain RAPOPORT

Romain's story was updated in November, 2014
A Vatel 2013 alumnus, Romain Rapoport didn’t need a lot of time for a successful career in the most beautiful hotels in Paris. He had just finished his final internship at the Hotel Renaissance Arc de Triomphe*****, when he was hired as the Special Events Coordinator at the Renaissance Paris Le Parc Trocadero***** Hotel. A year and a half later, he was promoted as the Sales Executive in another five-star hotel in Paris: the Marriott Champs Elysees. Romain will tell us about these dizzying promotions.

Romain, before telling us what you now do, could you tell us how you transformed your final internship into your first job?
My six month internship at the Renaissance Paris Arc de Triomphe was a very rewarding experience from all points of view. Working in an international group like Marriott, for me was not only a guarantee of quality but I was also sure that I would be working with a company that shared my values and those that I learned when I was attending Vatel. My job consisted in organizing events in the hotel: press conferences, workshops, birthday celebrations, after-work parties, and so on. My clients were very demanding ones, in the spotlight, and I had to propose events that were both urban and exotic. When I heard that Le Parc Trocadero was looking for a Special Events Coordinator, I jumped on the occasion and I was hired.

Can you tell us more about the job of Special Events Coordinator in a luxury hotel?
An Events Coordinator makes sure that there is seamless delivery of every event in the hotel, both for companies and for individuals. It’s his or her job to make sure that he’s got all the information required to do this. So then he can give recommendations to all the other departments that will be working before, during and after the event. And when you do this in a luxury hotel, that means that you have to have five-star service and never miss out on a note.
I personally organized residential seminars, workshops, business lunches and dinners, corporate cocktails, engagement or wedding parties, and baptisms. The most important thing for me each time was to make each event as personal as possible, while carefully following all of my customers’ specifications. Because of this, each event was unique, and that’s what my customers all wanted.
Like I said earlier, Vatel and Marriott share the same values and that’s why they encouraged me to go even farther in my personalization attempts for events, and they allowed me to roll out a program in the hotel called “Meeting Imagined,” that the Marriott head office uses, and that you can check out here on YouTube:

In your opinion, what qualities should you hone if you want to do this kind of job?
Of course, you need to like working in sales.
You have to be well organized, thorough and methodical. That’s really important when you’re taking care of twenty projects at the same time.
You have to be proactive, and be able to defend the initiatives you’ve taken.
You’ve got to be a really good leader in order to communicate and be understood by all the different team members.
You have to be curious and always be open-minded, to be able to sniff out the next trend.
And you always have to be available.

How were you hired for your new job as a Sales Executive and what do you do?
Working in Special Events Management allowed me to become aware of everything that could take place in a hotel and the different services offered. So after a few months, I felt like I could work in sales. Once again, there was a job vacancy that I applied for, and I was hired because of my results and assessments. My work consists in developing the hotel’s turnover by proposing different services both to new customers - and here I’m mostly targeting the corporate market,  - and customers that we’ve already worked with before.  To achieve this, you have to have an excellent relationship with your customers in order to consistently exceed their expectations. Of course, this is to turn them into repeat customers.

How did the courses you took at Vatel prepare you for these two jobs?
The quality of the courses and teachers in Vatel allowed me to start working with quite a bit of experience and knowledge of the hotel management field. All of our professors come from this sector and still work in it. They teach us how to make decisions and be accountable for them, how to constantly excel, how to work with strategic rules in hotel management and that you always have to know what’s going on in every department. This is Vatel’s renowned “knowledge:” academic knowledge, know-how, knowing how to work with people, knowing how to convey this knowledge, and knowing how to manage!

What skills that you learned at Vatel and in your internships allowed you to succeed, in your opinion?
Knowledge of the French hotel market, knowing how to live with others, legal rules and regulations, management, accounting, taxation, etc.
Concrete application of all of these basics in our professional application courses and internships.
Development of indispensable human qualities in our line of work: dogged perseverance, passion, wanting to learn and succeed, altruism, and commitment to customer satisfaction.

What advice would you give to students who would like to attend Vatel and work in the Hospitality and Tourism Management fields?
Be passionate, always want to learn more, and be demanding with yourself; this will facilitate your daily work and you’ll be all the happier because of it.

What are your upcoming projects?
I’d like to become an expert in my field of work and why not, in the long term, export my knowledge and skills abroad.

(Courtyard by Marriott at the Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport)聘为高级销售经理(Senior Sales Manager)。

Olivier MICHEL

“I love my city. I love hearing that it’s the most beautiful city in Europe.” This Vatelien turned his love for Lyon into his job, and gave those living in or visiting Lyon their first imperial bus tour with Opentours.
Olivier Michel, the General Manager of the prestigious bus transportation company, N&M, was appointed to the Presidency of the Centre des Jeunes Dirigeants Rhône Alpes [Rhone Alps Young Business Managers Center].
In his Success Story he’ll tell us how he began in luxury hotels, how he took over his family-owned company and give you some good advice.

Olivier Michel, after you graduated from Vatel Lyon, you began working in prestigious hotels: George V, Four Seasons and the Marriott. What kind of jobs did you have and what kind of opportunities came knocking on your door?
Following my final internship, I was hired as the Assistant Restaurant Manager at the George V Palace in Paris. Then as the Assistant Restaurant Manager at the Grosvenor House in London. Then I did my military service at the Elysee Palace and after that became the Night Manager at the Scribe Hotel in Paris.
Then I went into sales and I was promoted as the Sales Manager at the Renaissance la Defense Hotel in Paris. After that I was hired as the Senior Sales Manager at the Courtyard by Marriott at the Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport, before coming back to Lyon at the Assistant Sales Manager at the Meridien and then at the Radisson Hotel.
All these different jobs came from people I met as time went by and led to new opportunities I was able to seize. Then it was my work and involvement in each job that allowed me to be promoted to the next one.

In 2004, you became an entrepreneur, heading a business when you acquired the up-market N&M transportation company. Why did you make this decision?
As my father was also an entrepreneur and his family had also been in the transportation business for 125 years, I wanted to work with my father. An obvious choice as N&M was up for sale. N&M mirrored what I had experienced in luxury hotels.

Can you tell us a bit about it?
N&M is a roadway transportation company for passengers specialized in up-market services. We bring solutions in terms of logistics and transportation for our customers.
We offer transfers between train stations, airports, congress hall, and special events. We also do days in Lyon and in the Rhone-Alps region, evenings, city visits, tourist or industrial sites, etc. We propose up-market buses with 1 to 49 seats adapted to group travel.
For me, this naturally follows what I did when I was working in luxury hotels. We are a complement to business tourism activities for hotels, congress centers, restaurants, etc.

In 2005, you launched the “Lyon Le Grand Tour” sightseeing tour. How did you get this idea and what did it take to put it in place?
When we acquired the N&M bus company in 2004, we had the opportunity of meeting with those who launched Opentours in Paris. After they had launched an Opentour in Nice and Marseille, they were looking for a partner in Lyon.So we jumped on this opportunity to develop this activity in Lyon. This is the reason why we changed our name this year to Lyon L'OpenTour.

How did your hospitality profile and Vatel training contribute, even partially, to your success?
Working in hospitality allowed me to understand that I wanted to work in a service-related domain. And that also opened a huge breadth of work outside of normal working hours for the general public. In transportation, like in hospitality, we are “on” when other people are “off.” My training allowed me to understand this concept.

Since 2011, you have been leading the Rhone Alps Young Business Managers Center and in July, 2014 you will become the President of this Center, which as nearly 480 members. Can you tell us a bit about this Center, its missions and your ambitions?
The Young Business Managers Center is an entrepreneurial center for those who have their own companies. There are 4,200 of us in France and 800 more abroad. It’s the oldest employers’ organization in France, as it was founded in 1938.The Center targets five different subjects which are training, influence, reflection, experimentation and sustainability. We also work on global performance, well-being in the workplace, youth and flexibility.
I’d like to invite each business owner to come and meet others like him or her, plus training as an entrepreneur who runs a company by clicking HERE.

What advice for the future would you like to give Vatel students?
Give yourselves the means to succeed, the future belongs to you. Don’t hesitate to go abroad and discover other parts of the world to enrich yourselves with different cultures.

What are your medium and long-term projects?
We are going to launch a futurist tourist train on the slopes of the Croix Rousse.

Nicolas TESSIER

(The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels Limited)的旗下品牌,香港和上海酒店有限公司是由迈克尔?

Nicolas TESSIER

For over four years, professionals in the hospitality sector have only been talking about one thing: the grand opening of The Peninsula Paris.Titanic work requiring over 900 workers in the hotel that has 200 luxury rooms including 34 suites, six restaurants, an 1,800 square meter spa, a 20 meter pool, and a fleet of vehicles for hotel guests. Parisian luxury hotels at their apex, truly a “city in the city,” made up of 600 employees, carefully recruited by Nicolas Tessier, a Vatel 2005 alumnus, who was hired in February, 2014 in the Human Resources department of the Hotel.

The first European palace of the Hong-Kong based Peninsula brand opened in Paris on August 1st, 2014. In February, you were hired as the Assistant Human Resources Manager. How did you get this job?
For the past four years, the name The Peninsula Paris, has been on everyone’s lips in hotels in Paris. I impatiently waited for it to open, read everything I could about the group and their Parisian project and I understood that I shared the same values that Peninsula Group defends. Values of respect, generosity, humility and well-being of all employees are some of the strengths that made me want to work one day in Human Resources. So without a minute of hesitation, I sent in my application to Sylvie Quintin, the Human Resources Manager, who gave me the opportunity to show my passion for the hospitality industry and my drive to work in Human Resources when she first interviewed me for a job. Then I had the opportunity of meeting Nicolas Beliard, the General Manager. These interviews confirmed how important human values are for Peninsula and I insisted on how motivated and committed I was to participate in this adventure. I sincerely thank them for trusting me and giving me all these opportunities to continue learning in this job.

What are you doing to prepare the grand opening of this exceptional hotel?
Opening a hotel like The Peninsula Paris is an extraordinary adventure. We all start out with a blank page and we want to succeed in every field. To do this, we brainstorm a lot, getting feedback from all the others to make the best decisions. And we never forget the core of the hospitality industry: wanting to make others happy. I hope that all those who participated in the events we undertook, felt this.
Today our priorities in the Human Resources department are to finish recruitment of 520 employees for the hotel’s grand opening and then reaching a total of 600 in a few months, and of course making good working teams and coaching our employees. We meet both professionals and students in job fairs, or when we present our Group at schools. Each time, we can see how all these candidates smile, and really want to be a part of our teams, and that’s the greatest way for them to thank us.

Can you give us a few facts and figures about Peninsula Group hotels?
The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels Limited, which owns the Peninsula Hotels brand, is a family owned group managed by Sir Michael Kadoorie. Very present in Asia with six hotels, but also in the United States with three hotels, the Group is making its European entrance in Paris, with the opening of its tenth hotel, on August 1st, 2014.This hotel, which defines new standards in design, luxury and comfort, is yet another milestone in the brand’s approach to excellence, conferring a new level of distinction to Paris, the City of Light.

Before that, you worked for eight years in the Le Meurice Hotel. What jobs did you do? What promotions did you have?
I had an incredible experience in the Le Meurice Hotel. Dorchester Collection was with me all along my career and I was able to have held four different jobs.
First of all I started off as the Human Resources Assistant in charge of the payroll for three years. I was then promoted to Payroll Manager for two years, before become the Human Resources Coordinator, in charge of employee trade union relationships, and then Assistant Human Resources Manager. Each time I was promoted, the Le Meurice Hotel trained me for my new functions and helped me understand their stakes. The Dorchester Collection training program is an ongoing one. The farther you go in your career, the more training they give you with more managerial information. I totally loved working at the Le Meurice. And I’m very grateful for all the opportunities Management of this hotel gave me.

Why did you choose Vatel and what memories do you have? How did Vatel courses (theoretical courses, practical applications and internships) respond to your needs and expectations?
I was 16 when I had a summer job in a hotel-restaurant. I started off by serving breakfast, working at the front desk, and cleaning the rooms, and then I became interested in all the different jobs that this sector of activity had to offer. And in my last year of high school, I decided not to continue my higher education in law as planned, but in hotel management. I started to look for a school that would give me both theoretical and practical knowledge.Vatel met my criteria. Learning to confront reality in the workplace, by applying theoretical knowledge, for me, was something that was essential. So that’s when I applied to Vatel without any precise idea of what I wanted to do upon graduating.
I remember my first year of schooling where my internship took place in the Plaza Athenee Room Service department. That confirmed for me that I wanted to work in the future, in a luxury hotel environment. I saw staff with an eye for details, innovation and the desire to do everything possible to make their guests’ stay an unforgettable one. Then in my second year, I did my internship at the Hotel Scribe at the Front Desk. At the end of this internship I knew that I wanted to continue and work in Human Resources. I wanted to continue working in luxury hotels but also to be able to build more long lasting relationships with employees than those we were able to have with our guests. I wanted to participate in managing the careers of my fellow employees. When I did my final internship in the Human Resources department of the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome Hotel, I knew I had made the right choice for my career.
Vatel allowed me to confirm my choices little by little. What makes this school so very strong, are the courses given by professional faculty members and instructors, as well as the internships we do in luxury hotels.

What advice would you like to give to Vatel students who would also like to work in Human Resources?
This is a department where you really must love your job. Whether it’s in training, recruitment, social laws, or whatever, wanting to accompany your fellow employees on a daily basis and help them become personally fulfilled in their job must be your top motivation.
I’m aware that my schooling helped me transform myself quickly. Because I had worked with operational teams in my internships, I was quite aware of what really took place in these jobs, and it was easier for me to know what these employees really needed and expected. If I had some advice to give to those who want to work in Human Resources, I’d say that you have to like working with people, know how to manage teams, federate all sides and manage conflicts. On a daily basis, you have to be able to anticipate problems, be a good listener, be open-mined, intuitive, know how to deal with the unexpected and be a good trouble-shooter, while remaining firm, depending on the situation.
